{"id":58,"date":"2014-08-11T20:45:57","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T20:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chojinkai.x10host.com\/?page_id=58"},"modified":"2022-03-21T16:54:16","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T16:54:16","slug":"the-seventies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.chojinkai.com\/?page_id=58","title":{"rendered":"The Seventies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Seventies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0hard training throughout the sixties\u00a0paid off when\u00a0Doug was graded by Peter Spanton to Brown Belt 3rd Kyu in February 1970, on one of his regular visits to the club. This is when Doug started helping out at classes and first showed a keen interest in teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Complementing his teaching he had competed in Open Kumite competitions and in the North East Karate Kumite League, organised by Bryan Crossley from Bishop Auckland, who had been the first All Britain Kumite Champion in 1965.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chojinkai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DOUG-PHOTOS-ARCHIVE-TO-RECENT-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1593\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chojinkai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DOUG-PHOTOS-ARCHIVE-TO-RECENT-007-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chojinkai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DOUG-PHOTOS-ARCHIVE-TO-RECENT-007-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.chojinkai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DOUG-PHOTOS-ARCHIVE-TO-RECENT-007-768x863.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chojinkai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DOUG-PHOTOS-ARCHIVE-TO-RECENT-007-49x55.jpg 49w, https:\/\/www.chojinkai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DOUG-PHOTOS-ARCHIVE-TO-RECENT-007.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Doug scoring in early 70&#8217;s Karate League Kumite <\/em><\/strong><em>&#8211;\u00a0Referee Bryan Crossley &#8211; before\u00a0hand pads!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This resulted in Doug\u00a0winning the Silver Individual\u00a0Kumite Trophy in North of England Open in 1971 and the following year winning the North East Karate League Kumite Team together with his Budokan colleagues. The league was a forerunner of competitions in the North East &amp; attracted many top clubs such as Sendai Sunderland with John Holdsworth &amp; Owen Murray and\u00a0Kobukan Darlington with\u00a0Richard Copeland\u00a0to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p>His interest in competition continued. With the Budokan squad, Doug travelled to London and competed in the BKA Nationals, Kata and Kumite, reaching the quarter finals in the Kumite at Crystal Palace.<\/p>\n<p>Life moved on, and Doug and Rita were the proud parents of their first son Steven, who was born in 1973. \u00a0With priorities changing, Doug, Rita and Steven moved to Carlisle in 1974 to allow Doug to work in Production Engineering at Pirelli. the same year saw an opportunity to get the top English &amp; Scottish karate\u00a0clubs\u00a0competing together in the &#8216;Border City&#8217; &amp; founded the renowned &#8216;Cumbria Open Karate Championships&#8217; Toru Takamizawa 5th Dan<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1977 he\u00a0attended a Summer Course in Spain with Toru Takamizawa and Eddie Daniels from Shukokai Karate &amp; subsequently was successful in\u00a0grading to\u00a02nd Dan by BKA Panel in London.<\/p>\n<p>Doug&#8217;s first love\u00a0in the dojo\u00a0&amp; competitions had always been\u00a0sparring\/kumite,\u00a0however Sensei Takamizawa&#8217;s inspirational teaching &amp; attention to detail, got him\u00a0equally interested in Kata resulting\u00a0\u00a0in him\u00a0achieving the Silver medal for Kata in the BKA North West Championships &amp;\u00a0at the Tera Karate Kai Nationals, he won the Bronze medal for Kata in two successive years &amp;
