The rest as they say is history, I was hooked from the first lesson.

After 3 months of training I was ready for my first grading, it was here that I had my first introduction to other instructors who made up the grading panel. Three of these instructors would have a big impact on my future training, Sensei Fred Ritson, Sensei Chris Denwood and Sensei Iain Abernethy. This day was also the first time I met Sensei Doug James who still conducts training sessions to ensure all his Senior Instructors adhere to his high standards.
Soon after my first grading my instructor suggested taking part in the association competitions, which I did and won a number of medals for both Kata and Kumite but competition karate was not for me, having attended a number of seminars and training sessions based more on the practical application of martial arts in live situations I decided this was the path I wanted to follow.

After a couple of years of hard training and gaining my purple belt it was time to start attending the senior training sessions in Carlisle. At my first training session in Carlisle I met Sensei Darren Longstaff for the first time. I was invited to train with Darren at his Haltwhistle club which gave me more insight into the practical side of Karate and self defence. All the hard work paid off in early 2011 when I graded to 1st Dan Black Belt but of course it didn’t stop there, in 2013 I graded to 2nd Dan and in 2016 I graded to 3rd Dan.

I now train with Sensei Mark Heaton at his Wigton club. Over the years I have gained a great deal of knowledge from different styles of martial arts, attending seminars and various classes to complement and improve my Karate training. I have also spent a number of years working in door security at many venues and events across Cumbria gaining valuable experience and knowledge.

I am so proud and honoured to now be a 4th Dan (awarded in 2024) Senior Instructor in the Chojinkai Karate Association. I have made some great friends over the years training and working with other members and instructors. Long may it continue.

I started training with Chojinkai in 2005 at the Workington club under the instruction of Sensei Colin Broatch. The reason I began training Chojinkai Karate was that my wife and daughters started training a few weeks earlier and my youngest daughter was not going to continue training unless I went as […]
